In 1942, the National Secretaries Association (NSA) was formed in the United States, later renamed the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP) in 1998. The NSA, in collaboration with public relations executive Harry F. Klemfuss and C. King Woodbridge, then president of Dictaphone Corporation, sought to officially recognise the secretarial profession.

Their efforts led to the establishment of “National Secretaries Week” and “National Secretaries Day” in 1952. The first observance took place on 4th June 1952, with subsequent observances moving to the last full week of April, with the Wednesday of that week designated as National Secretaries Day. US President Dwight D. Eisenhower officially proclaimed the first National Secretaries Week.

Over the decades, the responsibilities and scope of administrative roles expanded significantly, necessitating a change in the observance’s name. In 1981, it was renamed “Professional Secretaries Week” and “Professional Secretaries Day” to reflect the increasing professionalism and complexity of these positions. Finally, in 2000, to be more inclusive of the diverse range of administrative support roles beyond just “secretary,” the observance adopted its current name: “Administrative Professionals Week” and “Administrative Professionals Day.”
