In 1228 AD, Sukapha, along with his followers, crossed the Patkai Hills and entered the Brahmaputra Valley. This migration marked the beginning of the Ahom rule in Assam.

Sukapha systematically integrated various indigenous communities, including the Moran, Borahi, Chutia, and Kachari tribes, into a cohesive administrative structure. He adopted a policy of conciliation and assimilation, rather than conquest, which contributed to the stability and longevity of the Ahom kingdom. His diplomatic approach and administrative skills laid the foundation for a distinct Assamese identity that transcended ethnic divisions. The Ahom kingdom, which Sukapha founded, ruled Assam for approximately 600 years, successfully resisting numerous invasions, including those by the Mughal Empire.
