What Is Bihar Divas?

However, there was a growing movement advocating for a separate province for the Bihari-speaking population, driven by concerns over administrative neglect and cultural identity.

Key figures such as Sachchidananda Sinha, Mahesh Narayan, Anugrah Narayan Sinha, and Dr. Rajendra Prasad played pivotal roles in spearheading the campaign for a separate Bihar province. Their sustained efforts, coupled with the political climate of the time, led to the announcement by King George V at the Delhi Durbar in December 1911 that Bengal would be partitioned again. This led to the creation of three new administrative units: the Presidency of Bengal, the province of Bihar and Orissa, and the province of Assam.

On 22 March 1912, the notification for the formation of the province of Bihar and Orissa was officially issued. This date is consequently observed as Bihar Divas, commemorating the day Bihar gained its distinct provincial identity. Later, in 1936, Orissa was separated from Bihar to form its own province, and in 2000, the southern part of Bihar was carved out to create the new state of Jharkhand.
