The party emerged from the intellectual ferment following the May Fourth Movement of 1919 and the spread of Marxist ideas in China.

The decision to observe CPC Founding Day on 1st July was made later. In 1938, during the Yan’an period, the Central Committee of the CPC, under Mao Zedong, designated 1st July as the anniversary, based on the recollections of earlier party members who believed the First National Congress had started around that date. Despite historical research later confirming the actual founding date as 23rd July, the 1st July date has remained the official day of commemoration.
