Kim Il Sung was born on 15 April 1912, and he established the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea in 1948, leading the country until his death in 1994. Throughout his rule, his birthday was celebrated, but its status as a formal national holiday intensified after his passing. In 1997, three years after his death, the Workers’ Party of Korea officially designated 15 April as the “Day of the Sun.”

This designation was part of a broader effort to solidify Kim Il Sung’s posthumous status as the nation’s eternal leader and to reinforce the ideological foundation of the state. The holiday integrates deeply with the Juche ideology, a self-reliance philosophy propagated by Kim Il Sung, positioning him as the central figure in the nation’s history and future. The date also serves as the starting point for the Juche calendar, which uses 1912 as its inaugural year.

How Day of the Sun Is Celebrated

The Day of the Sun is marked by extensive, nationwide commemorations across North Korea. In the capital, Pyongyang, the observances often involve grand military parades, mass games, and large-scale public performances featuring thousands of participants. These events are designed to showcase national strength, discipline, and devotion to the leadership.

Citizens typically visit statues and monuments of Kim Il Sung, such as the Mansu Hill Grand Monument, to lay flowers and pay respects. The Kumsusan Palace of the Sun, where the embalmed bodies of Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il lie in state, sees a significant number of visitors, including high-ranking officials and ordinary citizens. The state may also distribute special rations of food or consumer goods to the population, known as “gifts from the leader,” to enhance the festive atmosphere. Artistic performances, film screenings, and sports competitions are also common, culminating in fireworks displays in the evenings.

While the Gregorian calendar is used for international affairs, North Korea also employs the Juche calendar, which begins its count from Kim Il Sung’s birth year, 1912. Therefore, 15 April 2024, for example, would be referred to as 15 April Juche 113. The fixed nature of the date ensures consistent nationwide observance each year.
