Lachit Borphukan (1622–1672) was a general of the Ahom Kingdom, which ruled much of the Brahmaputra Valley in present-day Assam for nearly 600 years. He is best known for his role in the 1671 Battle of Saraighat, fought on the Brahmaputra River near Guwahati. The battle was a crucial confrontation between the Ahom forces and the invading Mughal army, led by Ram Singh I of Jaipur.

Despite being severely ill, Lachit Borphukan rallied his troops, leading them to a decisive victory against the larger and better-equipped Mughal forces. His tactical brilliance, particularly his innovative use of naval warfare on the river, and his unwavering determination are historical highlights. The victory at Saraighat halted the Mughal Empire’s expansion into Assam, preserving the Ahom Kingdom’s independence.
