Resistance to Portuguese rule was spearheaded by Mohamed Thakurufaanu and his two brothers, Ali and Hassan. They embarked on a guerilla campaign against the occupiers, operating from Haa Alif Utheemu, an island in the northern atolls. Their strategic and persistent efforts culminated in a decisive battle on the island of Malé, the capital, which led to the defeat and expulsion of the Portuguese in 1573. Mohamed Thakurufaanu subsequently became Sultan, ruling for 12 years and establishing a new dynasty.
