After years of conflict, a historic agreement known as the Mizoram Accord was signed on 30th June 1986 between the Government of India and the MNF. This accord paved the way for Mizoram to be elevated from a Union Territory to a full-fledged state.

On 20th February 1987, Mizoram officially became the 23rd state of the Indian Union.
