Hundreds of thousands of Azerbaijanis gathered, protesting against Soviet rule, advocating for national sovereignty, and expressing solidarity with fellow Azerbaijanis in Nagorno-Karabakh. The protests continued for several weeks, becoming the largest and longest-lasting public demonstrations in the history of the Soviet Union up to that point.
