In an unprecedented move, Commander Johannes de Graaff of Fort Oranje returned the salute with eleven guns, an act of customary international courtesy between sovereign powers. This exchange is widely recognised as the first official recognition by a foreign government of the United States’ independence.

The “First Salute” had significant diplomatic repercussions, leading to protests from the British and ultimately contributing to the Fourth Anglo-Dutch War.
